How can you find a home business that works?

New home-based businesses are beginning each day. As of this writing, over forty million people own a home-based business. These home-based businesses, even if only partially successful, can provide extra income, allow for part-time rather than full-time work, give a tremendous boost to your self-esteem and provide tax advantages. But each year thousands of small businesses fail. Most are them are doomed because they didn’t do one or more of the following:

1. Your business must have an advantage over your competitors which will make customers want to buy from you. Many times, home-based businesses sell a service. If you provide quick response, expertise or more friendly service, customers will choose to buy from you over a purchase from a larger business.

Select a service needed by a lot of businesses or individuals. For instance, operation of import-export business, grant locating services, helping to obtain creative real estate financing deals, providing assistance in obtaining other loans, doing freelance work.

2. Don’t try to break into a home business that is already being done by many others at price levels you can’t match. If a product is available and cheaper at Wal-Mart, most people will go to Wal-Mart.

The popularity of certain home-based business means that they are so widely promoted they are no longer profitable. There are too many in the field already. For example—transcribing medical information used to be a profitable home-based business, but other transcription methods and a glut of home-based transcribers meant limited profitability for the future of the field.

3. Look for a way to market your home-based business on a continuing basis. There are many inexpensive alternatives to expensive advertising campaigns. The advent of web resources has made it easy to promote your home-based business without spending a fortune on advertising.

Probably most important is the advice to start small and let your home-based business success determine how fast the business will grow. After all, if you outgrow your home space, you no longer have a home-based business.
